Dr Subramanian Suriyanarayanan

My nick name is subbu. I born in 1978 in Kallidaikurichi (in southern part of India) where I spent most of my life.

After my secondary school, I received my bachelor degree in chemistry in 1999. I joined The American college, India and received my masters degree in chemistry in 2001. During this time I got interest in understanding the interfacial process especially, electrochemistry. I also used to teach graduate students to understand the basic principles in physical chemistry.

I entered the research community in 2001 when I joined Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore in India under the supervision of Prof. Sampath. My research was focused on self assembled monolayers (SAMs) on metallic surfaces. Objective of my research is to understand the structure, stability and interfacial characteristics of SAMs of alkylthiols prepared by different methods. The main body of my research is to understand nature of water molecule on hydrophobic surfaces. In my research studies I used atomic force microscopy, spectroscopy (RAIRS) and electrochemistry to follow the monolayer structure and stability. My research activities comprise publication in peer reviewed journals including Biomacromolecules, Analytical and Bioanalytical chemistry and Journal of Colloid and Interface Science. I have also presented my research work in international conferences.

During my tenure in IISc, I visited University Joseph Fourier, Grenoble, France, where I worked in a project “Functionalized nanosurfaces for nanobiosciences” under Prof. Arthur Soucemarianadin. The aim of this project is to develop metallic nanoparticle precursor for printing conductive structures. I stayed in France for four months and subsequently moved back to IISc to continue the project.

I submitted my thesis last November and will defend it in May 2008.

I came to Poland in February 2008 and joined Prof. W. Kutner’s lab at Institute of Physical Chemistry-Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. I work as an experienced researcher in the NASCENT programme. Here my work is to develop nicotine sensors based on molecularly imprinted polymers.
